Rain Gauge Stake - Heron

Made my wife happy.

I somewhat agree with Reviewer Rich. The glass tube sits directly under the head and neck by design, which are thin but they could impact the rain collection. I didn't understand Rich's comment about the tube opening being too big. I would think a larger collection area would yield a more accurate measurement. The loop (heron foot) that holds the tube wasn't perfectly horizontal, so the tube sits at a slight angle. While that is a sloppy defect, overall the gauge is well-made. BOTTOM LINE: By it for its good looks and not its accuracy. The metal head and glass body look slightly better in real life than in the picture. I am pleased with my purchase and would recommend it.

In regards to my recent order of the heron. There are good and bad points that I wish to bring to your attention. The color and glass is very nice. The Heron was as pictured. However, The rain vial has a large opening that does not equate to the graduated cylinder totals. I do not expect great accuracy but the ratio provides better than a 25% error by design. Secondly the heron structure is directly over the vial when the rods are fully tightened adding to increased error on rain total. Third the vial is at an angle and displeasing aesthetically. I would have returned the item but it is not worth my effort and expense to do so. Occasionally I purchase items on line and find out why I should not. I’ll provide a review so others are not as disappointed as I was upon my wife opening the item. This item is badly designed and over priced. Now less than I paid just a week ago. I get an occasional heron in the pond behind my house. They look like flying dinosaurs and I love seeing them so I thought, why not a heron decoration? This rain gauge heron is not super heavy duty, but it is well made and pretty. The long ground stake (her leg) screws together, which surprised me but it works. It's tall and sturdy.
