Description

Have you ever wondered about the hole in the top left-hand corner of The Old Farmer’s Almanac? The holes first appeared in the late 1700s, when we made our earliest Almanacs. Readers discovered how useful the Almanac was in their daily lives and wanted it close at hand. So, it was a simple matter of taking a nail, punching a hole through the Almanac, tying a string around it, and then hanging it up in a handy spot, such as the barn or kitchen, or even the outhouse!

For the last 100 years or so, we've been drilling the holes ourselves. This fun ornament, inspired by the Almanac hole, was made in Dublin, New Hampshire, less than a mile down the road from the offices of The Old Farmer’s Almanac. Our village craftsman cut and etched wood with a laser to create this nicely detailed outhouse, right down to the crescent Moon on the door. The outhouse's quality and construction is excellent. This ornament is assembled with finger joints, as well as mortise and tenon joints.
